Wabtec Selected to Provide PTC System Integration for New Mexico Rail Runner Express

WILMERDING, Pa., May 23, 2019 – Wabtec (NYSE: WAB) was selected to implement the Positive Train Control (PTC) system for the New Mexico Rail Runner Express (NMRX), in an order worth $55 million. Building on ongoing design work, Wabtec will provide full system integration for deployment of PTC on NMRX’s full fleet of 18 locomotives/cab cars and nearly 100 miles of track extending from Belen to Santa Fe.

“Wabtec is pleased to support NMRX’s deployment of PTC,” said Rajendra Jadhav, President, Wabtec Electronics.  “With 22,000 locomotives and cab cars across the United States equipped with Wabtec PTC technology, it is a privilege to help advance the rail industry’s vital safety mission, and we look forward to accelerating our work with NMRX.”

Under the contract, Wabtec will implement its Interoperable Electronic Train Management System (I-ETMS®) PTC safety-overlay system on NMRX, including all necessary wayside and communication design and dispatch upgrades, with full PTC Back Office Server (BOS) support and equipment and software upgrades to nine NMRX locomotives and nine cab cars. The contract schedule calls for NMRX PTC assets to be in revenue service by late 2020.

As an on-board geographic database and global positioning system, I-ETMS® continuously calculates warning and braking curves based on all relevant train and track information including speed, location, movement authority, speed restrictions, work zones and consist restrictions, providing an additional safety overlay.    Intended to help prevent track authority violations, speed limit violations and unauthorized entry into work zones, I-ETMS® provides significant enhancements to rail safety.

NMRX is owned by the State of New Mexico through the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). NMDOT contracts with the Rio Metro Regional Transit District (RMRTD) to oversee the day-to-day operations of the railroad, to include dispatching, track and signal maintenance, maintenance of equipment and the operation of the Rail Runner commuter service. RMRTD is the legal entity responsible for ensuring FRA safety regulatory compliance including PTC implementation. RailRunner operates seven days a week between Belen, Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM. Rail Runner is the 24th busiest commuter rail line by annual ridership in 2018 (770,000).
