American manufacturers are starting to talk more like Europeans, where fuel is costly, and words like “sustainability” pepper conversations. One case in point is the 2020 Sustainability Report for freight and transit rail manufacturer Wabtec Corporation.

Wabtec President and CEO Rafael Santana pitched House lawmakers on Wednesday for federal support to decarbonize the U.S. rail transportation industry ahead of talks for upcoming infrastructure legislation this spring, saying the Pittsburgh-based manufacturer has a “clear path” to develop the next generation of zero-emission locomotives.

A year ago, Wabtec Corp. made the first steel key to Neighborhood 91. Now it is taking up residence. Wabtec has reached an agreement to lease more than 11,000 square feet of space in Neighborhood 91, the hub for additive manufacturing being built at Pittsburgh International Airport.

From the outside, the locomotive whirring along Wabtec’s test tract in Erie looks almost like any other. The operator cab is pretty standard, too.
