Wabtec flexing its muscles – and horsepower – for the future of emission reduction with battery locomotives.

Following eight years of work with operators in Brazil’s rail market, Wabtec Corp. is debuting its new ES44ACi diesel-electric locomotive, with deliveries to Suzano, MRS and Rumo this month and next.

Wabtec is introducing a new heavy-haul locomotive model to Brazil’s freight rail market. The ES44ACi diesel-electric locomotive will first be delivered to Suzano, MRS and Rumo in the coming weeks.

Wabtec has been selected to modernize 330 GE Dash 9-44CW units for Norfolk Southern (NS). The new order will bring Wabtec’s total number of power upgrades for the Class I railroad to more than 950 upon completion of work in 2025.

Wabtec donated GECX No. 6002, which becomes the first modern A.C.-traction locomotive to be preserved in a museum. The locomotive was built in 1998 for Union Pacific as its No. 7511, and returned to GE to serve as part of its Engineering Test Fleet.

Starting in the second quarter, UP will be testing B20 biodiesel and R55 renewable diesel on Wabtec FDL engines operating in California, with plans to up the percentage of biofuels used as testing continues.

Wabtec is expanding its engine cooling product line to include aluminum. This move aligns the company with market trends and helps customers to maintain a competitive edge. New furnaces are being installed at the Jackson, TN and Northampton, UK facilities to support this strategy.

For fourth-quarter 2021, Wabtec GAAP earnings per diluted share of $1.02 rose 121.7% from the prior-year period’s $0.46; adjusted, they were $1.18, up 20.4% from $0.98. Sales came in at $2.07 billion, a 2.4% increase over the 2020 quarter’s $2.02 billion. The company attributed this to “higher Freight segment sales, partially offset by Transit segment sales. During the quarter, we estimate that sales results were adversely impacted by 3%-4% due to supply chain disruptions.”

Wabtec Corp. announced Monday a donation of $15,000 to Montana State University-Northern for scholarships for students enrolled in electrical, diesel technology, automotive technology or advance fuels programs.

Battery electric power is commonplace in cars and trucks and is being tested in planes, helicopters, and container ships. Now, battery power is coming to trains, in place of the diesel-fueled generators that have powered locomotives for more than a century.

The locomotive manufacturer Wabtec lit up the Intertubes last November when it debuted the new FLXdrive 100% electric locomotive in Pennsylvania, but that was just the beginning. The company has nailed down two clients in Australia for its carbon-free choo-choo while also locking in a spot on the new Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking, which aims to green up railway systems throughout Europe.
